The 2011 Maryland State Scholastic Championships were held on March 19 and 20 at Dumbarton Middle School in Towson. A total of 534 players competed over the weekend setting a new record for the largest chess tournament every held in Maryland. State Championships were awarded for teams and individuals in four grade levels.
High School Championship
Individual Co-Champions: Tanner McNamara (Severn School) and David Snyder (Northwest High)
Team Champion: Northwest High School, Germantown
Tanner and David had a blitz playoff to determine Maryland's representative to the Denker Tournament of High School Champions. Tanner won the playoff 1.5 - 0.5.
Middle School Championship
Individual Champion: Bendaguz Offertaler (Takoma Park)
Team Co-Champions: Takoma Park Middle School, Takoma Park and Dumbarton Middle School, Towson
Elementary School Championship
Individual Champion: Sahil Sinha (Goshen)
Team Champion: Fox Chapel Elementary, Germantown
Primary School (K-3) Championship
Individual Champion: Jordon Best (Hamilton Elementary/Middle)
Team Champion: Stone Mill Elementary, North Potomac
