The 2012 Maryland High School and Middle School Championships were held this past weekend (March 17-18) at Dumbarton Middle School in Baltimore. A record 205 players played compared with an equivalent 187 players last year. The tournament was split off from the Elementary School Championship held last Saturday due to size constraints - also had a record number of players with 411.

The Middle School Champion based on tiebreaks was Ronald Best from Hamilton Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore. However, since there was a tie for first place also with Jeffrey Chang from Takoma Park Middle School in Silver Spring, there was a blitz playoff for the right to represent Maryland at the Barber Tournament of Middle School Champions this summer. Chang won the playoff 2-0. Congratulations to both these winners. Hamilton Elementary/Middle School was the team champion.

The High School Champion was Kevin Wang from Winston Churchill High School in Potomac with a perfect 5-0 score. Wang won the right to represent Maryland at the Denker Tournament of High School Champions this summer. Winston Churchill High School also was the team champion.
