Day 2 of the 2016 Maryland Sweet 16 tournament has started, and Round 3 has been completed. With draws on the top boards, the field has become more bunched, setting up an exciting Round 4. Depending on the results of the top Boards, we could have an outright winner, or a playoff that could involve 2-5 players. A playoff between two players will be an Armageddon game. If there are 3 or more players, then a Blitz Playoff will take place.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 qualifying season for the 2016 Maryland Sweet 16 on 2016.03.05-06. Since 1995 this annual invitational tournament has featured 16 of the top K-12 Maryland players competing in a separate section of the UMBC Open at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The MD-Sweet-16 tournament-announcement page contains all tournament details, including qualification rules & Varsity-Points scoring rules. The MD-Sweet-16 Champion will receive a MD-Sweet-16 UMBC Chess Scholarship, valued at $44,024. (There are 2 additional types of UMBC Chess Scholarships for which high-school seniors from any state are eligible.)

9 of the 9 scheduled MD-Sweet-16 Qualifiers in this qualifying season have been completed. The FINAL STANDINGS include the results of the rescheduled MCA Roland Park January on 2016.02.28.
