MD Sweet 16

Welcome to the 2014-2015 qualifying season for the 2015 Maryland Sweet 16 on 03.07-08.2015. Since 1995 this annual invitational tournament has featured 16 of the top K-12 Maryland residents competing in a separate section of the UMBC Open at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The MD-Sweet-16 Champion will receive a MD-Sweet-16 UMBC Chess Scholarship: a fixed-dollar scholarship valued at $41,536, spread over 4 years. (The scholarship covers tuition & fees, but not room & board.) Incidentally, there are 2 other types of UMBC Chess Scholarships for high-school seniors who reside either inside, or outside Maryland.

7 of the 9 scheduled MD-Sweet-16 Qualifiers in this qualifying season have been completed. The standings are current through MCA Oakdale on 01.03.2015. Of the 2 remaining scheduled MD-Sweet-16 Qualifiers this season, the next scheduled one will be MCA Poly on 1.17.2015 at the Baltimore Polytechnical Institute (Baltimore, MD), & the final scheduled one will be MCA McDuffie Memorial on 02.21.2015 at the same school in Baltimore.

Congratulations to Jerry Wu (1944), a 9th grader at Richard Montgomery High School who earned 4/4 points to become the 2014 Maryland-Sweet-16 Chess Champion. The MD-Sweet-16 Champion will receive a 4-year MD-Sweet-16 UMBC Chess Scholarship to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, valued at $39,056 in 2013-2014. There are 2 additional types of UMBC Chess Scholarships available to all scholastic residents of Maryland.)

Update to follow: Jerry T Wu from Gaithersburg, MD has won the 2014 Maryland Sweet 16 chess tournament at UMBC with a perfect 4-0 record, including a 4th round win over Sahil Sinha. Jerry is a freshman at Richard Montgomery High School in Montgomery County. With the victory, he has won a 4-year chess scholarship to UMBC. More details to follow.
