5-Round Swiss system in two separate sections (everyone plays 5 games)
Open to all. Spectators are free and welcome!
Held concurrently with separate Sweet 16 Invitational, which determines the Maryland Scholastic Champion, who wins a four-year in-state fixed-dollar tuition scholarship to UMBC (worth over $45,000).

UMBC Chess Club Events (open to everyone):
The UMBC Chess Club meets Fri, 11am–2pm, in the Commons, student activities area (Wed, 11-12, Eng 022)
The UMBC Championship (5-SS) is held in September, beginning the second Saturday after Labor Day.
The UMBC Open—Alvin S. Mintzes Chess Tournament (5-SS) is held beginning the first Sat. in March.
