2019 UMBC Open—Alvin S. Mintzes Chess Tournament

(in Commons Building, 3rd Floor)

 

5-Round Swiss system in two separate sections (everyone plays 5 games)

Open to all. Spectators are free and welcome!

 

Held concurrently with separate Sweet 16 Invitational, which determines the Maryland Scholastic Champion, who wins a four-year in-state fixed-dollar tuition scholarship to UMBC (worth over $45,000).

Game in 90 mins, +30 sec. increment (USCF rules)

Entrance Fees

$50 if postmarked by 2/15; $60 late; free to GMs ($50 deducted from prizes);

$10 less if under 20 years old

½-Point Byes Available

Up to 3 in Rounds 1–5 if requested at least 1 hour before round (before Rd. 2 for any Rd. 4–5 bye), but at most one ½-point bye in Rds. 4–5.

* USCF membership required. May purchase at site at current rates, which are approximately $49 adult, $25 scholastic.

** Unrated players may not win more than $250 in U1800 section

UMBC Chess Club Events (open to everyone):

The UMBC Chess Club meets Fri, 11am–2pm, in the Commons, student activities area (Wed, 11-12, Eng 022)

The UMBC Championship (5-SS) is held in September, beginning the second Saturday after Labor Day.

The UMBC Open—Alvin S. Mintzes Chess Tournament (5-SS) is held beginning the first Sat. in March.
